Science Educator

General Statement: The Fleet Science Center’s Science Educator supports the Fleet Mission Statement and Visitor Experience Philosophy by providing educational programming designed for school groups and public audiences.  This position will teach Fleet workshops, outreach programs, School in the Park classes, summer camps, birthday workshops, assembly shows, Girl/Boy Scout and other youth and adult programs and assist with developing curriculum for these programs.

Reports to:  Education Manager

Primary Duties and Responsibilities, including mental requirements of position:

1.    Must be able to work 20 hours per week, including occasional evenings and weekends, based on reservation schedule, or as needed.
2.    Present Outreach Programs to area schools.
3.    Responsible for safety, care and maintenance of Fleet van and outreach exhibits.
4.    Present Fleet Workshops to field trip students.
5.    Present Rosa Parks programs as needed.  Assist Education Specialist in presentation of Rosa Parks programs.
6.    Assist in creation, planning and implementation of new or existing Fleet programs, summer camps.  This may include curriculum writing as needed.
7.    Teach summer camp classes, Birthday workshops, Girl/Boy Scout Badge and other youth programs as needed.
8.    Present education activity at VIP events, Family Science Days and other special events as needed.
9.    Assist with curriculum development for education programs.
10.    Conduct weekly confirmation calls to outreach and workshop school groups scheduled.
11.    Handle questions, comments and/or complaints regarding education programs and events professionally and tactfully.
12.    Attend employee training program and other trainings and meetings as directed. 

Tools and equipment used to perform this position: computers, printers, fax machines, copy machines, basic classroom equipment, outreach equipment.

Supervision, direction, or guidance provided for this position:  Performs duties with supervision of Education Manager but can function in classroom or in school independently. 

Light Work:  Position involves sitting, standing, and/or walking.  Position requires ability to frequently exert up to 10 pounds of force to move objects and occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force to move objects.

Experience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:

  • Some college education required, bachelor’s degree in education or science preferred.  
  • Valid CA driver license.
  • Experience teaching/leading school-aged children in hands-on acticities and youth supervisory experience a plus.
  • Basic science content knowledge required.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate in front of a large group and direct a large group of students and/or adults.
  • Ability to communicate verbally in person, on the telephone, and in writing with students and adults.
  • Ability to handle multiple functions.
