Tips and Traps for Small Business Owners

Employment Basics for Business Owners: How to Avoid Traps for the Unwary

Doing business in California can be difficult. Not only do you have to be very clear on your business and products, but you also have to understand and comply with the legal requirements applicable to employers. Complying with California employment law is absolutely critical to the success of your business. Otherwise, your greatest asset -- your employees -- can also be your biggest litigation landmines.

During this workshop, we will walk you through the ins and outs of hiring and managing employees, and terminating them if necessary.  Attendees will be provided with a checklist and quick reference guide addressing onboarding issues, personnel management and postings, reporting requirements, and termination procedures.

Presenter

Denise Visconti
Office Managing Shareholder
Littler Mendelson

Denise handles a broad variety of employment litigation matters, most often stemming from claims arising under the California Labor Code and the Fair Labor Standards Act, alleging overtime misclassification and other wage and hour violations. She also has experience with single-plaintiff claims involving wrongful termination, sexual harassment, employment discrimination and accommodation. A large portion of her practice involves the defense of clients in class action litigation, particularly in wage and hour matters, along with representative actions and private attorney general matters. Denise also has extensive experience conducting pay equity audits for all types of employers, from start-ups to Fortune 50 companies, and helped develop the Littler Pay Equity Assessment, including counseling employers on a broad range of state and federal issues related to pay equity, from compliance, to updating policies and job descriptions, to training managers and recruiters, and more.
