Since 1956 Civic Youth Orchestra (CYO) has enriched the lives of young musicians throughout Southern California - from aspiring young children who are beginning their musical experience, to the most accomplished musicians, complementing their passion for music with the finest professional training.
The Civic Youth Orchestra offers the experience of performing music using symphonic musical instruments available to children of any race, religion or ethnic origin, without regard to economic circumstances. CYO provides performance opportunities in superb concert venues to children of various skill levels, enriching their educational experience with a stimulating performance preparation program.
CYO celebrated its 60th anniversary last year by honoring its founding music director, Daniel Lewis. The gala event in La Jolla included showcase solo performances by alumni from past years as well some of CYO's current, talented young musicians. A symphony orchestra composed of nearly 150 current, and former musicians who came from throughout the U.S., then dazzled a Copley Symphony Hall audience with a superb performance.
CYO alumni have gone on to study at renown music conservatories such as Julliard, Berklee, Curtis and Colburn and now enjoy careers as Grammy-nominated solo artists, composers and symphony orchestra members.
Research has found that learning music facilitates learning other subjects and enhances skills that children inevitably use in other areas. Music learning supports all learning.
Civic Youth Orchestra has two remaining concerts to close its performance season; June 10, at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido; and June 17, at Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego which will honor its graduating seniors.
