SUMMARY:The Business of Defense - Surviving Sequestration
DESCRIPTION:SDSU Business Alumni Network Presents: The Business of Defense\n\nSurviving Sequestration: How and where San Diego will grow its defense industry and remain a world leader\n\nWednesday\, October 17\, 2012\n\n5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.\n\nCorky McMillin Conference Center - Liberty Station\n\n\n\nThe business of defense is a vital contributor to San Diego's economy and global profile. Our panel of military\, defense and economics experts will discuss sequestration\, the state of the industry\, what San Diego's leaders are and are not doing to protect the region's stake\, and where the jobs and growth will be going forward.\n\n\n\nWhat is Sequestration? : The sequester (automatic spending cuts totaling more than $1 trillion over a nine-year period) will go into effect on January 2\, 2013\, but its specter is already starting to impact businesses\, and the cuts could cost the U.S. more than one million jobs in 2013 and 2014. Many of these cuts are in defense spending and about 5 percent of all civilian jobs in the county are military-related\, and 15\,000 businesses in San Diego County rely on Department of Defense contracts. That translates into an over $18 billion annual spending impact to the San Diego regional economy.\n\n\n\nRoger Hedgecock\, host of The Roger Hedgecock Show on KFMB-AM\, moderates a panel of experts: \n\n\n\nDebra Rosen\, President & CEO - San Diego North Chamber of Commerce\n\nTerry Magee\, Board Member & former President - San Diego Military Advisory Council (SDMAC)\n\nMichael Twyman\, VP & GM - Defense System Division\, Northrop Grumman Information Systems\n\nDavid Rowe\, CEO & President - 5D Robotics.\n\nMark Cafferty\, President & CEO - San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation\n\nRADM (ret) Hamlin Tallent\, Vice President - C4I Systems for Sentek Global\, Inc.
