Tell us about your company.

JA of San Diego's volunteer-delivered, kindergarten-12th grade programs foster work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills, and use experiential learning to inspire students in our community to dream big and reach their potential.

What products or services does your business provide?

As a community-based organization, JA of San Diego helps local students realize that the education they are getting today will help them to have a bright future tomorrow. JA's unique programs show them all of the possibilities that lay before them. Our programs give San Diego's next generation of business leaders the tools and confidence to responsibly manage their finances, compete in the global market and embrace entrepreneurial opportunities.

What was the most memorable or successful moment in your business' history?

14 years ago we secured a property, The Capdevilla Gillespie Center for Junior Achievement, that has since allowed us to develop The McGrath Family BizTown and Mission Fed JA Finance Park. JA BizTown combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to a simulated town. This popular program allows elementary school students to operate banks, manage restaurants, write checks, and vote for mayor. The program helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. Mission Fed JA Finance Park is a paperless, high-tech learning center that helps students imagine their future through participation in a budgeting simulation. Our program helps thousands of San Diego teens, young adults and families learn how to make intelligent financial decisions that will last a lifetime. JA Finance Park helps students imagine who they want to be and gives them hands-on tools and skills to plan for a financially secure future.

Tell us an interesting fact about your business.

We have impacted over 1 million students throughout San Diego County with our hands-on, experiential programs since opening our doors in 1950.

What tips/advice can you offer that is related to your business' industry?

In order to ensure the success of San Diego's future, it is important that we continue to teach students the importance of fiscal responsibility, work readiness and entrepreneurship.

Do you have any upcoming events or information you want your fellow Chamber Members and the community to know about?

On March 11th, we are hosting our 4th Annual Stock Market Challenge. Join other San Diego business professionals at the San Diego International Airport Innovation Center for an exciting night of networking and friendly competition on the fast-paced floor of the stock market. Trading is high energy and fun as 60 days of stock trading are condensed into two hours of teams competing for the title of Stock Market Champion! 100% of the proceeds empower over 400 high school students to learn the basics of the stock exchange, risks and benefits of trading, and how to manage money.
